Celebrating one year of The Advisory

On 1 July 2020, Auren Freitas dos Santos launched The Advisory with the goal of assisting those living and working in community schemes with navigating the complicated issues that arise in these types of properties.

Shortly thereafter, Ané de Klerk joined The Advisory as a Senior Consultant and has since been appointed as a Director. Tim Gliddon joined in March 2021, to assist with the rollout of our vision, manage client relations and ensure the smooth running of our training.

In April 2021, we officially announced that Ané would be presenting the three principal Paddocks UCT online short courses, which are considered the industry standard of community scheme management training in South Africa. She has since run two very successful presentations and is currently running a third. Details of upcoming presentations are included later on in this newsletter.

Over the last year, we have continued to answer complex questions and offer expert guidance with community scheme dilemmas, as well as assist clients with dispute resolution processes, both internally and via the Community Schemes Ombud Service's dispute resolution process, thereby fulfilling our mission to improve all aspects relating to community scheme management.

We'd like to thank every person who has supported us along the way, whether by engaging our consulting services, enrolling in a course, following us on social media, or signing up for our newsletter.

In this month's edition, Auren discusses a recent High Court Order, where a complainant was severely penalised for bypassing the Community Schemes Ombud Service's dispute resolution procedures. Ané focuses on how managing agents and trustees using outdated language regarding improvements to common property can result in neglecting the correct legal procedures.

We have also included an #AskAuren segment, where readers can reply to this edition with their community scheme questions, and we'll select one question and answer it on our social media pages - be sure that you like or follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn to get your question in the running.

Kind regards,
Auren, Anė and Tim
